SHORT BIO

Dr. Piotr Szwedziak received his PhD in 2012 from the University of Cambridge for his work on the bacterial cytoskeleton conducted under the supervision of Jan Löwe at the MRC-LMB in Cambridge. As a bridging postdoc with Jan (2012-2015), Piotr elucidated the molecular mechanism of bacterial cell division using cryoEM as his major technique. Then he joined Martin Pilhofer’s lab at ETH Zürich to study a highly dynamic secretion system in pathogenic bacteria. From May 2019 Piotr has been a group leader at the ReMedy Unit and his Laboratory of Structural Cell Biology is additionally supported by an EMBO Installation Grant.

 

RESEARCH INTERESTS

Laboratory of Structural Cell Biology

The overarching goal of the Laboratory of Structural Cell Biology is to understand cellular organization and architecture at the macromolecular level in health and disease. For that we employ a multiscale approach, combining biochemistry with cryoEM, predominantly electron cryotomography of whole cells. By uncovering molecular details of fundamental cellular processes, we want to better understand human disease.
